Founder

Shri Chander Mohan Chawla (24 Dec 1940 – 08 Jan 2005)

His life was gentle, and the elements
So mix’d in him, Nature might stand up,
And say to all the world; this was a man
—William Shakespeare

UBSPD, Vikas Publishing House Pvt. Ltd and Madhubun Educational Books have their beginnings in the humble yet determined efforts of a man known for his vision laced with simplicity. The journey from Universal Book Stall set up by his father Shri D. R. Chawla in Kanpur, to the streets of Ansari Road, Delhi was a long and eventful one for Shri C. M. Chawla, the towering architect of UBSPD, India’s largest book distributor.

On a hot June afternoon in 1963, the first step was taken with only seven people on board. Veterans claim that it changed the history of the Indian book trade forever. Today, this small step has grown to a giant stride reaching books to over hundred countries from more than 5000 Indian publishers and picking up more than 50 awards for excellence in exports on the way. With 15 branches/stockholding points all across the country, UBSPD stands tall, both figuratively and literally.

In 1969, Shri Chawla laid the foundation for Vikas Publishing House Pvt. Ltd and in 1972 for Madhubun Educational Books. Both the organisations are known to stand for quality and creativity in the educational publishing world. With over 1900 active titles, they reach more than 10000 schools and colleges pan India.

Apart from being one of the founding fathers and earliest patrons of the Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP), the many distinctions and posts he has to his credit were as Chairman of Books and Publications Panel of Chemicals and Allied Products Export Promotion Council (CAPEXIL), President of the Federation of Publishers’ and Booksellers’ Association in India (FPBAI) and Trustee of National Book Trust, India. Many were the awards conferred on him during his lifetime but flaunting them would go against the grain of this simple, elegant and humane personality.

In the words of N. Subrahmanyam, a former Head of a leading publishing house and a contemporary of Shri C. M. Chawla: ‘…The litmus test of a manager’s success or otherwise in his business suit is whether he/she built a vibrant team of performers, those who can take on adversity with flourish and quintessentially positive thinkers…The institutions he built are the living evidence of Chander Mohan Chawla’s pioneering entrepreneurship and overall business excellence in the realm of books, in India.’
